The "ground" of a painting, the surface, is a place I merge my sculptural sensibilities with the act of painting. I like to build, layer, mix, and play with a myriad of materials, often revealing a complex landscape before I introduce any imagery. In these works I have let that initial landscape of texture and material dictate more "physical" paintings. I do think of them as the "ground" and love to play with shape and patterns to introduce space and movement and depth.
